After 4 months of development, countless man hours and alot of late nights this portal with a twist has been unleashed on the world. (in beta of course)

But why do I care about another news portal you ask? Because this ones different I say. This one will pay you to publish content on it! True!

Rather than me woffling on here is the official press release.

New Australian online media portal launched

Scopical announced today the launch of its all Australian interactive online news and media portal. Delivering the latest in National and World News, Business & Finance, Sport, Politics, Tech/Media and Entertainment, the portal offers a competitive choice to the Australian market.

Scopical takes media from agencies, news wires and bloggers throughout Australia and will be the first major portal to offer a real financial return on media additions by all users.

Scopical hosts a key difference in its ability to harness user-generated content in news and media delivery and is the first to fully embrace this increased media form in up to the minute news coverage. Scopical collects and produces its own textual and image news content whilst posting live coverage from Australian based news agencies, bloggers, freelancers and individuals everywhere.

The company will embark on an aggressive development strategy with further technology and user interactivity flagged in the coming months.

The portal has correspondents based in the UK, New Zealand, North America, Russia, Asia and the Middle East, providing the latest in coverage of world events and adding an additional dimension to the portal.

Ah good, a spare 2 minutes!

Well I like to think that it's a good problem to have. Too few hours in the day.

Our team of trained monkeys have been slaving away for the last month, at times pulling 48 hour shifts just to get the work out. So to help relieve the pressure ( and hopefully prevent a postal episode) we have just employed two new developers. Welcome guys!

We have managed to push out a couple of new websites for beta launch whilst additional functionality and refinements are being made. These new additions to the Cyber portfolio are:

Sunlite City Hardware & Delmege Commercial Property.

I will go into both of these websites in greater detail in future posts.
With a little luck we will also be launching four more sanscode websites in the next three weeks.

We have also had some big wins which I unfortunatly cannot tell you about just yet but stay tuned for the juicy updates.

The end of August will also see the launch of our biggest project yet.

As always stay tuned for more info as it comes to hand!

Blend it!

I just found what I think is one of the most creative viral marketing campaigns that I have seen to date.

Were you one of those kids that just loved to break things?

A brand of blender, Blendtec, that I have never heard of before has a website called willitblend.com which features a heap of videos of, well, stuff being blended.

But why is this creative marketing you ask? We all know what stuff looks like once it’s been blended! Mushy!

But!

Have you ever seen an iPhone blended?

Or a video camera?
Or a can of EZ Cheese?

I certainly know I hadn’t but damn it’s cool, and very appealing to the destructo's out there such as myself, as I am fairly sure that I would not have visited the Blendtec website under normal circumstances.

Have you seen any other creative marketing campaigns out there in the wild?

Its been a busy time in Cyber Space

Yes, Yes i know! Posting has been, well, very light recently. But for good reason. We have been busy little bee's.

Apart from the usual ebb and flow of work from our existing clients we have recently picked up new web design contracts for:

  • Delmege Commercial Property
  • Building People Recruitment
  • i2i Recruitment &
  • Trannys Print Solutions

All will be built on our sanscode CMS.

We have launched Platinumpackaging.com.au, a new Jewellery Packaging & Watch Winders wholesaler, and continued to upgrade and expand Mynetfone.com.au.

We have lost one of our fantastic designers, Homaira, who has gone and gotten herself married, and is moving to Germany!

To replace her (as difficult as it was) we have hired an equally fantastic designer who is to start in a few weeks time.

We have also put on a second developer and 4th full time designer.. All in an effort to ensure that we maintain the level of service and quality that you have come to expect from Cyberdesign!

It is looking to be a very busy third quarter as we enter into Catalogue Design season as well.

All of this certinally doesn't mean that we can't handle more work though! Quite the contrary, Bring it on!

Launch - MyNetFone.com.au

MyNetFone - Australian VoIP Provider

After a frantic two months of development, Cyberdesign Works is proud to announce the launch of the new and vastly improved MyNetFone website.

This story begins 9 months ago with a phone call from the MyNetFone Marketing Coordinator, and after a lengthy negotiation and specification process we were appointed to the task of completely overhauling the MyNetFone website and building in a number of new features and functions (these I will get into shortly).

The brief was, "go for broke and wow us", so we got stuck right in, with different concepts coming from each of our designers. Concept refinement saw elements from pretty much every concept combined into the final product that you see now.

Sure it looks great but what does it do?

The new MyNetFone website is built using Cyberdesign's own sanscode CMS. This is the same CMS that underpins the majority of our web design projects. The difference is in the number of additional, custom modules and components that were developed to support the numerous functions and features of the website.

What are these features you ask?

Well from an administration point of view absolutely no programming, html or technical knowledge is required of the MyNetFone administrators in order to maintain the website. Ah the beauty of sanscode. For a sanscode demonstration please contact us.

MyNetFone Administrators can also dynamically control all devices, plans, promotions and specials with the click of a button.

Website users have access to the following features and functions:

  • International Call Rate Search
  • Savings Calculator
  • MyNetFone Support including
    • Downloads
    • FAQ's
    • Terminology
    • Support Ticket submission
  • Online Purchasing via a secure shop

sanscode also allows for the rapid and inexpensive development and deployment of new functionality as required.

Web Design - Platinum AwardAward winning Design

The MyNetFone.com.au website has also just earned us a Platinum award from the Australian Web Designers Network. Judged by a panel of Judges on Graphics, Artwork, Layout, Navigability, Functionality and Originality the award is a nice pat on the back after alot of very hard work.

New Client - SilverTrak

SilverTrak Logo Design & Corporate Identity

Well not entirely a new client as we did actually design the previous Silvertrak website, however we have recently been awarded the contract to re-develop their current website.

The new Silvertrak website will be powered by Cyberdesign Works' own sanscode cms, the same cms that underpins all recent Cyberdesign Works web design projects, and will allow Silvertrak to serve a number of different yet interlinked microsites from a single web based control panel.

As well as the website project, we have been commissioned to re-design the Silvertrak logo which has now been completed, and can be viewed here.

One of the driving factors in the web site re-development project is that SilverTrak are now the Australian reseller of the Rimage range of Disc Publishing & Disc Printing Systems.

I'm a Dad!

On Saturday 24th March 2007 at 1.22pm I became a father for the first time!
My wife Melinda gave birth to a bouncing baby boy who we have called Sebastien, via c section at the St George Private Hospital.

Weighing in at 9 pounds 14 ounces in the old measurements or 4.490kg, and 53 cm in height he pretty much dwarfs all the other babies in the nursery.

We didn't know whether he was a boy or girl until he came out however we did have a good idea what he liked like.

How is this possible you ask?

Well until recently the only view that expecting parents and doctors had of an unborn child was via 2D ultrasounds, you know those grainy, black and white images with vague outlines of what kind of looks to be a head. Recent computer imaging technology has allowed doctors to create a 4D ultrasound which gives you a complete 3 dimensional view of the unborn baby.

Whats the 4th Dimension?

It took me awhile to figure out as well but the 4th dimension is time.

The 4D Ultrasound machine renders a 3D image in close to real time.

How accurate is it?

See for yourself!

Gotta be happy with that!

One of my weekly (ok daily) routines is to have a look through all of the stats for the websites that we monitor via Google Analytics.

Having not looked at the stats for about a week I was surprised and excited to see that one of our latest clients has reached the first page of Google.

Whilst this is great in its own right, what is even better is that the website consists of a single page with just the companies contact details and simple list of services.

Thats it!

Who is the lucky client? Ozpave, an asphalt contractor and civil contractor.
Don't believe me? Here is the search page.

So if we can get Ozpave onto the first page of Google with a single and extremely simple "Coming Soon" page, and admittedly not even trying, I am extremely excited to see what will happen when we launch a highly optimised, content rich website in the next couple of months!

Numero Uno here we come!

A little bright'n'shine

Regular visitors may have noticed that we have undergone a quick freshen-up.
We have brightened our colours, tidied our portfolio and re-created our homepage flash.

Over the coming weeks we will be improving our portfolio to provide more interactive demonstrations of our animations and websites. The first example of this is our EasyWay Tea example. Check back soon for the latest updates.

Bzzzzzap!

Here are Cyber we are a mixed bunch. Half of our team prefer PC the others Mac. As with all PC and Mac users we are constantly having "chats" about the benefits of one platform over another and so on.

About 10 minutes ago this favourite topic of conversation arose again as our office suffered a minor power failure. The lights turned off, and a scream of "F*%$##@&%" arose from the design room.

Our PC designer Kyle just lost the last half hours worth of work. Our Mac designers Matt and Homaira however continued working throughout the powerfailure. Apparently Mac's have some tricky internals that allow them to function in the event of a minor power outage. How cool.

I guess that kind of goes towards redeeming the massive price difference! ;)

Online Shoppers Ask for More Detailed Copywriting

Which of these two products would you rather purchase?

Product #1
Great Top for Hot Summer Days

When it's hot outside, this top will help keep you cool. Made of cool nylon, you'll love how it stops moisture. Available in four pastel colors.
OR

Product #2
Perfect Tank Top for Hot Summer Days

When the temperatures are steamy outside, this tank will help keep you remarkably cool. Made of breathable 100% nylon, you'll love how it sheds moisture. Available in four spring-fresh colors.
I think i can safely say that you would be much more likely to hit the "buy now" button on product number two.

This quick little example as provided by isedb.com, demonstrates the importance of emotive copy writing when describing your products to your customers.

Karon Thackstons article also highlights the fact that 68% of consumers surveyed by Allurent, Inc in their Online Customer Experience Survey, wanted the ability to "feel" a product through the use of better imagery and more detailed and emotive product descriptions.

The key message from this is that users are more likely to make emotionally driven decisions when making an online purchase rather that fact driven ones.

To use another example provided by Karen @ isedb.com, I would much rather:
As your day begins, enjoy a gourmet breakfast prepared by your own private staff -- at your disposal 24 hours a day. A gorgeous view overlooking your own crystal-blue freshwater pool welcomes you to another exciting adventure in Hawaii. A morning stroll along your private, white-sand beach is the perfect way to welcome the day.
A fun-filled outing can consist of splashing in the surf, sunning on the beach or napping in an authentic hand-woven hammock that cuddles every curve of your body. At the end of the day, you'll have sun-kissed shoulders, a glowing bronze tan and a phenomenal appetite!
Unwind poolside at the gazebo as you prepare for a world-class dinner that rivals any five-star restaurant. Refreshing after-dinner cocktails are especially enjoyable when sipped on the terrace as nature provides an amazing display of sunsets and a soft, caressing breeze you won't soon forget.
Than:
Rent our two-bedroom condo right on the beach! You'll have a private staff to meet all your needs. Pool, hammock and gazebo are on site. Gourmet chef will cook all your meals to order. This is the best vacation house you've ever seen!
Make your users feel like they are there, let them touch, taste, smell and want your product most importantly and the conversions will follow.

Cloning - the Sincerest Form of Flattery?

Sometimes you have to laugh. Meg over at dlook.com.au has found an enterprising yet somewhat deluded request for the development of a dlook.com.au clone.

This would normally be quite flattering except for the fact that the published budget for this mammoth project is between $300 and $1500!!

Now I am not exactly sure what this person expects to get for their $300 to $1500 budget especially as dlook.com.au would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to develop let alone maintain.

Website Cloning is certinally nothing new to us here at Cyberdesign Works. As previously reported one of our clients JD Security has had their site duplicated by an Indian Security company. Flattering for us but potentially devistating for the customer. Frustrating for all as it too was done on the cheap!

You are coming to a sad realization. Cancel or allow?

Allow.

I recently received a new desktop PC for the office which came preinstalled with Vista Business. the first thing i noticed was that i has to confirm everything that i did.

Yes i want to download firefox.
Yes i am sure i want to download firefox.
Yes now that i have downloaded firefox i do want to run the file.
Yes now that i have run the firefox install file i do actually want to install firefox.

ARGH! 5 minutes and a Google later i discovered that you can turn this constant questioning off.

What i am not sure of however if turning off the User Account Control is the same as dropping the soap in a prison shower. Who knows what could happen!?

Something New Everyday - Images in RSS

Now I know that all of my fellow RSS addicts will look at that title and say "well Dah!" but I am not talking about images within the feed article itself.

This morning I noticed the face of the latest Australia's Biggest Loser evictee, Michael, looking out at me from my NetVibes feed reader in News.com.au's National Breaking News feed.

Tricky, News.com.au! very tricky!

Now this is something that I have never seen before and it certainly did catch my eye over the 80 or so other articles on the screen.

Oh and congrats Michael on the weight loss! Amazing effort!

Has the whole world conspired to abolish web banners without telling me?

Unfortunately no. I'm just a fool!

I just spent 15 minutes trawling through ninemsn.com.au, news.com.au, zdnet.com.au & gadgetguy.com.au trying to find some good examples of web advertising banners for a client of mine and i could not for the life of me find a single web banner.

I thought I was loosing my mind. Where had all the advertising gone? Has the whole world conspired to abolish web banners without telling me?

Then it dawned on me! I saw this little red icon in the bottom right of my FireFox window.

Apparently Ad Block Plus a nifty little FireFox extension was doing its job perfectly. It was blocking all traces of banner ad's and because the sites that I was viewing were built using liquid CSS the gaps where the ad's should have been were simply closed up. Not a trace of advertising to be seen. I didn't even realise it was running and had been since this computer was configured.

As a quick experiment to really see how much advertising there was out there now I turned off Ad Block Plus and no the world has not conspired to abolish web advertising. Ad's have gotten bigger and flashier than ever! Not that there is anything wrong with that. I can certainly see that there is a definite need for advertising as it helps to pay for all of the free content I am getting.

Unfortunately for me I find banners very distracting and often draw me away from the content I want to read. Congratulations Advertisers you have done your job I am drawn to click! Unfortunately for you I can turn you off and focus on the story at hand.

It's here, it's here, our Google Local Letter

Everyday for the past 7 business days I have been skipping to the letterbox (actually I have been rolling my chair over to the admin desk) to check for the delivery of my eagerly awaited letter from Google!

This magic letter was to herald the delivery of our Google AU Local Business Listing PIN as reported on the 6th of Feb.

Upon seeing the colourful Google logo and emiting a little squeal of delight (I'm a geek i know, but these things excite me, don't judge me for that!), I tore open the (rather thrifty on Google's behalf) folded envelope and followed the instructions.

Then my bubble was burst. I now have to wait up to six weeks for our listing to be updated as Google only refresh their listing approximatly every four weeks. What the?

Upon inspection of the prior mentioned thrifty envelope (a simple folded piece of paper with three stickers holding it together) i noticed that the letter had been dispatched from Jamaica N.Y and not Australia. I second my previous "What the?".

Oh well, I guess the wait will give me another reason to post a blog in a month's time.
I am still going to frame this Google letter though, after a bit of photoshop work of course to add my name in there instead (don't judge me)!

Plasma Goodness & Destroying Stuff

And now for something completely off base. I just Stumble!Upon'd a Digg story about some very exciting new tech. 74 year old Joseph Longo, founder and CEO of Startech Environmental Corporation has developed a revolutionary garbage disposal unit.

But this is no ordinary garbage compactor or hollowed out space rocket ready to send our banana peels into outer space!

It's a Plasma Converter.

What the hell does that mean you ask?
Well as described in Slice of Scifi it works its magic by;

"This annihilation process is described like something similar to the the big bang, only in reverse in that you get nothing from something, instead of something out of nothing. Inside a sealed vessel made of stainless steel and filled with a stable gas—either pure nitrogen or, as in this case, ordinary air—a 650-volt current passing between two electrodes rips electrons from the air, converting the gas into plasma. Current flows continuously through this newly formed plasma, , creating a field of extremely intense energy very much like lightning. The radiant energy of the plasma arc is so powerful, it disintegrates trash into its constituent elements by tearing apart molecular bonds."
So what becomes of all those torn apart molecules? They are turned into an obsidian-like glass used as a raw material for numerous applications, including bathroom tiles and high-strength asphalt, and a synthesis gas, or “syngas”—a mixture of primarily hydrogen and carbon monoxide that can be converted into a variety of marketable fuels, including ethanol, natural gas and hydrogen.

The only trash this little beauty cannot tear apart is nuclear waste as it is already in its natural atomic state. As a destructive child who still enjoys pulling things apart, this thing sounds like a wonderful toy!

You can find a full detailed review on popsci.com.

So! How long will it take for our local governments to bring this into the environmental election arsenal? At an easy $250 million per unit it's peanuts. Especially seeing as it can process roughly 2000 tons of waste per day which is apparently what an average large city will produce.

The byproducts can also be sold by the government or better yet put to good use fixing our roads, supplementing our power supplies or even our petrol bills!

Imagine a world without landfill and renewable energy provided by our own waste. Cool!

Get yourself listed! Australian Local Search

As a mid twenties, married, home owning professional, i like to think that i am most organisations target audience.
This makes it fairly easy for me to get inside my head as a target audience.

As i tell every person i meet, my primary source of information relating to products and services is the Internet.
My FireFox homepage is Netvibes where i hook up to all of my news and industry information via a ridiculous number of RSS feeds, my second tab is Gmail and right there next to it is Google.

News, Mail, Google.

So if i am looking for information on, well, anything, i head to tab number three. If i can't find you there, then i am sorry i just don't know about you.

However!

Recently the big three, Yahoo, Google and Windows Live Search have launched or updated their online mapping offerings and as previously reported Google has finally launched Local Business Listings for Australia.

As soon as i saw this feature launched i was straight onto the site to register us, Cyberdesign Works, for a listing. Whilst i was there i thought i would check out what else is our there in the Local Search arena.

Yahoo!7 run localsearch.yahoo.com.au I am not entirely sure where the get their listings from (it looks like Truelocal.com.au) but i did find us already listed which was nice.

Windows Live Local
whilst it looked good i could not find how to get listed. Hopefully my "help" email to Live Search will yield a response.

There are also other great local directory sites such as:

Street-directory.com.au
Truelocal.com.au
Not to mention good old Yellowpages.com.au
DLook.com.au also provides free business listings however minus the map and direct link to your website. Their group qouting facility makes up for this by allowing you to source qoutes from a number of businesses in a single form. Links and an improved profile are available via upgrading your listing.

In discovering these resources of localised business listings, for me, it makes it even more important for the businesses and services that i am searching for be listed. Now because i can, i want to get a map, so that i know exactly where you are located, i want to know your opening hours because there is nothing more frustrating than arriving just on closing time or getting a recorded "our office is currently unattended", and i want to know if you will accept my card. Then once you have passed all of those tests i will check out your website where i want to find what i am looking for, and the price if possible.

For businesses that rely on walk in or area specific traffic it just makes sense to able to be found in a local directory, and as a great supporter of community (or is it just laziness?) I would much rather buy locally, so get listed!

NOTE: Yahoo!7 also provides a great little service called Yahoo!7 Fuel Price Watch, listing the cheapest petrol in in Australia. An invaluable service seeing as everyone us jacking up prices "due to the cost of petrol".

Have a play with Mobile Maps and Local Search as well.

UPDATE - Thanks Meg for picking up my oversight of DLook.com.au
If anyone has a suggestion for alternative Local Business Listing sites please let me know so that i can update this list.

Search Giants tell You Where to Go

The days of your old printed street directory shoved under the seat of your car are certinally numbered with the increasing popularity of portable GPS units (such as Road Angel). The giants of online search however have other ideas and are locked in a battle to win over mobile phone users with mobile search and mapping applications.

The three major search players Google, Windows Live Search and Yahoo have all recently either updated or launched their mobile search and mapping answers to the market.

As a hardcore mobile users from way back i of course jumped at the chance to tinker with my toy whilst being told where to go!

Yahoo Search for Mobile (YSM) - http://mobile.yahoo.com/search

I signed up for the beta testing of Yahoo's answer to mobile search and mapping a number of weeks ago and finally got accepted via an sms (nice touch Yahoo). I did encounter problems when i attempted to download the application onto my Nokia 6288 so as yet i have not been able to actually test this product.

Cyberdesign Works - Google Maps for Mobile LocationI have left a help ticket for Yahoo and am awaiting a response to my problems.

Windows Live Search for Mobile (WLS Mobile) - http://wls.live.com/

My first impression of WLS Mobile was very good. the maps are very readable, directions came up very quickly and were correct most of the time. The main problem i encountered howoever was that all distances were measured in miles and not KM's. WLS Mobile has however just come out of beta so i hope that this issue will have been fixed in this release.

Google Maps for Mobile (GMM) - http://www.google.com/gmm

With the recent launch of Local Business listings on maps.google.com.au i feel that GMM is currently the best mobile mapping application of the three (i bow to my google overlords). It is very easy to search for a specific business name or a business type in a specific suburb or just key in your address. All business listing results are currently pulled from TrueLocal.com.au however Google is accepting business submissions abet with a lengthly submissions process (damned snail mail).

I am however experiancing difficulties in downloading the correct version of the GMM application for my handset, apparently the file size is too large for my Nokia 6288 to download, thus i am using a generic version which does not correctly map my buttons and as such does not allow me to zoom in. A pain if i accidentally zoom out. Google will hopefully respond soon.

Both WLS Mobile and GMM managed to find an address for me and was able to calculate directions from our Artarmon offices. The kicker is that both applications gave different directions! Both GMM and WLS Mobile also required me to be very specific in how i keyed in my desired address. eg

49 Herbert St, Artarmon, NSW, Australia

Having the application know that i am in Australia would be a nice touch however having to key in the country is not a critical hinderance to usability.

The next big thing will be the ability to use your GPS enabled handset to connect to these mapping services in real time, then the Search Giants will really be telling you where to go!

NOTE: Oh the beauty of having a photographic studio in the office. No bodgy screenshots for me! Thanks Matt!

Google Maps AU Launches Local Business Listings

Google Maps Australia has just announced the launch of Australian Business Listings.
this feature ahs been available in the US for sometime now and i have been eagerly awaiting its launch down here!

Whilst at launch Google are drawing business listings from TrueLocal.com.au you have the ability to submit your own listing directly with Google containing all of your contact details, opening times and your own description.

The interesting thing is that in order to verify your listing you must wait by your letter box for a snail-mail containing a verification PIN!

I can understand this from a security, spam and verification point of view however in this digital age you would think that there would be some way to verify online. Not that I am complaining mind you. I am just happy that the feature has become available to us!

Save a tree, send an e-card

For Christmas '06 John (our director), and I decided not to send out the obligatory corporate Christmas card, instead we thought we would save some trees and send our clients Christmas e-cards instead.

Two days before we wanted to dispatch our e-cards we got around to briefing Homaira (hom-i-ra) one of our fantastic designers on the idea. The brief was:

"We want a Christmas card, but online. And animated!"

Comprehensive wasn't it! BUT, from this Homaira managed to create this brilliant animated Christmas e-card.

The response was fantastic, so we have decided to open the doors to an e-card package, whereby your company can purchase the; design, animation and dispatch of your e-card for a fixed price. We can even customise each card with the name of the recipient and tell you who opened the card and if they clicked any links as well.

You don't have to wait until Christmas either. E-cards work famously for any message such as invitations or promotional messages.

Google is the new http://

An interesting observation has been noted over at franticindustries.com on the fact that many users are performing a Google web search instead of typing in a web address directly into their URL bar.

Classic examples of this are users searching in Google for:

"myspace" instead of myspace.com;
"ebay" instead of ebay.com.au and even
"google" instead of google.com

This is also something that I have noticed happening for one of our clients, Easy Way Tea.
Their website address is easywaytea.com.au however in the last week they have had over 300 visitors via Google for the keywords "easywaytea" (please note that the live site for Easyway Tea is an old site which we are currently in the process of re-developing).

The fact that people are using Google to search for google goes to show that users don’t think about Google as a specific web page, they think of it as the service, an essential part of the internet experience. They’re using this service to get to the page they want.

From my point of view this seems to boil down to trust. Users trust Google and as franticindustries.com notes:
It’s good news for Google, that’s for sure. When people think your service is an inseparable and essential part of the Internet, it’s hard for someone else to jump in. But it also means that domain names as static terms scattered across the Internet aren’t the primary way of distinguishing between different web sites any more. If people don’t use the address bar, they won’t go to the site with some exact domain name: they’ll go to the site Google deems most important for the term they’ve entered.
This means that ranking highly in Google's Organic Search Results becomes even more important as even if users do know your web address they are likely to try and find you in Google first, and if Google doesnt deem your site relevant you will loose that visitor!

Build it and they will come.. Think again!

"Build it and they will come", sorry but this doesnt apply on the internet.

Nowdays even more important then the website itself is the publicity of the website. Wide publicity and public exposure of your website is the only way to build more exposure and back links into your website.

I have had great success using Localised directories to draw relevant local traffic to my clients websites. For example: Stellar LifeStyle Management has seen fantastic results from both Gumtree and Craigslist with a number of qualified enquiries being received very soon after publishing a listing on both directories. Submissions are completely free and are extremely easy to create.

Hitwise have also just released a list of Local Australian directories in their article Grass-Roots Classifieds Momentum.

Whilst directory submissions are not fantisticlly brilliant for search engine optimisation, they are perfect from drawing in local traffic. For assistance in finding relevant directories for your website please contact us.

Using Article Marketing to Establish Trust

When it comes to finding information on the Internet, there's more than enough to go around. But when you want to get specific information to specific people, this can become a little more complicated. If you're in a business that you'd like to advertise to customers, this action falls into the category of article marketing, and here's what you need to know.

Readers on the Internet are more skeptical than ever. It seems that no one really believes what he or she is told. They believe even less that someone actually wants to help them find the answers they're looking for. However, knowing this, you can begin to re-establish the trust that is missing. You can do this by making sure that any article marketing you're involved in includes quality content with information that will show the reader your authority regarding the subject as well as the connection to your business.

Another concern with article marketing is presenting factual and compelling information. When you're looking to entice new customers, you need to present yourself in the most positive light possible. This means that you need to know what customers are looking for, and do your best to provide the information. Try to keep up to date with the latest trends in your industry and know what customers are talking about. You can go to article forums or business message boards to look around at what customers are saying. Any articles that you write for your business website can then be tailored to addressing these issues. You might even want to post on these forums, directing people to your website for more information.

Along with your article marketing plan, you'll want to ensure that your readers can contact you for more information, if needed. Try to include your website address as well as email address so that you show that you genuinely care about following up with their concerns. You might want to set up an autoresponder function on an email account to answer these queries immediately and show that you are willing to interact with customers and future contacts.

Establish continued contact with those that have read your articles by offering free reports, newsletters and other valuable information from your business. The only trick is that this information needs to be useful and not all sales-related. The key to successful article marketing is to inform your readers so that they want to take action – that is, buy your service or product. But when a reader feels pressured into the sale, they can be hesitant to do so. Offer valuable information and mention your business occasionally, which allows the customer to feel like they have the final decision.

Here are some key points to remember with article marketing:

• Introduce information rather than pitch sales items
• Establish your credibility and authority
• Offer free and useful information
• Create actions that the reader can take such as signing up for newsletters, free reports, etc.
• Give the reader your contact information.

Article marketing goes beyond getting your article to as many people as possible. You need to provide interesting and factual information that your customers and potential customers can use. And once they realize that you are trying to help them, they will begin to look at what else you can offer. It will be the beginning of a beautiful business relationship.

Three Simple Ways to Improve Your Website

Tim Hedger over at ISEDB.com has just posted a nice little guide containing 3 easy steps to refresh and update your website. A website update doesn't need to be a complete overhaul. It can be as simple as replacing a homepage image, or updating your introduction text or posting a piece of news.

Here are Tim's three tips which are almost weekly rituals that I follow for our website.

1/ Sign up for social media. Get involved with colleagues and communities found at Linked In, Flickr, MySpace or some other such social network. It only takes a few minutes to sign-up and establish an account. Adding to your profile can take an hour or two at the beginning but will take less time as time goes on.

The benefits from being involved in social communities are two fold. You can research, contact and collaborate with others in your field quickly and easily. You can also use your profile to promote your business.

2/ Provide more contact and address information. There are two primary places contact information is expressed on most websites. The first is the obvious contact us page and the second is in the footer section found on most sites. Adding more information to both places is beneficial for search placements and for site visitors. Detailed contact information is especially useful for placements in local search engines.

The contact us page should offer as much information as possible, including full street addresses with postal or zip codes. It should also include a map from Yahoo, Google, Ask or MSN. The footer section of each page should, if applicable, provide full postal and telephone contact information including zip, postal and area codes.

3/ Perform a gentle audit of the website. This should be done at least four times a year. Go through the site and make notes of all the little things that require changing. You are most likely looking for minor alterations, not a full scale redevelopment.

Does your website say all the things you want it to say? Is there any information or references that could be updated? Do all links lead to active pages or sites? Are the staff or executive bios up to date?

Website updates needn't be a scary or time consuming thing and the payoffs for keeping the site relatively fresh and updated can be immense.

By simply updating our contact page with direct contact information we have already noticed an increase in enquiries. The map link in our footer has also received hits, therefore sites that are backed up by a retail presence will certainly gain value from having a map.

So sit down, take a look at your website, make a list of small things that need updating and get too it. It''s time definitely well spent!

SEO Hack Attack!

So far two of my regular search engine optimisation reads have been hacked.
The culprit, whose own blog has now been taken offline has launched a scathing attack on a number of authoritive Search Engine Specialists and has threatened to hack and deface quite a number more specialists sites. [UPDATE: The hacker has now moved his site over to BlogSpot]

Matt Cutts from Google made the top of the hit list however it is GrayWolf and Stuntdbl that have been served the first blows.

Claiming to be a moderator of the popular webmaster haunt Webmasterworld, you have to wonder what has finally tipped this guy over the edge?

Heres an extract from the GrayWolf attack:
What I’m going to do?

I’m going to crack all the SEO related sites/blogs/forums that I can… Maybe once in a while a non-SEO site will slip into the list but what the hell! Who cares anyways?

I will publish here detailed information on how I did it and maybe the juicy stuff that I find on their sites - Backups, sql dumps, secret stuff… who knows :)

Actually no, I’m so sorry that was my WH side speaking… I will not publish the juicy stuff, I will trade it for stuff that I need & e-gold. If the owner acts like a biatch, the juice will end up at the little green demon

Why I’m doing this?

1. Because I want

2. Because I can

3. Because lately the SEO industry is LAME and BORING - Want a proof of that?

- The SEO industry is just a bunch of self-proclaimed gurus making more money from their “guru” status than from SEO.

- The blogsphere (God I hate that word) is filled with countless “SEO blogs” syndicating what other “SEO blog” syndicated from another “SEO blog” that syndicated some bullshit guru.

Discussion threads hav been setup over at Digital Point and Threadwatch
I am so glad i don't claim to be a Search Engine Guru!

HD-DVD may be feeling a little blu

I’d be feeling a little blue too, if I were competing against the world's leading electronics and media giants that include Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson).

All of these manufacturers will be bringing to market Blu-ray also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), the next-generation optical disc format developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA).

This super high capacity format provides rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc.

It may prove to be an effective and efficient way to back up artwork files, our small web and graphic design studio process can manage to generate up to 25 GB of data each week. I’d be happy pay up to $2.00 or more to back up the week’s works – “cheap insurance”, as Matt would say! (by the way, Matthew is one of our highly regarded designer’s, an established member of the Cyber team). Sorry!, I digress, back to the story.

Backward Compatibility a big +

Most players will be able to read/write CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs using a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical head, so you don't have to worry about your existing DVD collection becoming obsolete. In fact, most of the Blu-ray players coming out will support upscaling of DVDs to 1080p/1080i, so your existing DVD collection will look even better than before. While it's up to each manufacturer to decide if they want to make their products backwards compatible with DVD, the format is far too popular to not be supported. The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) expects every Blu-ray Disc device to be backward compatible with DVDs.

Blu-ray v/s HD-DVD

Although both Blu-ray and HD-DVD are similar in many aspects, there are some important differences between them.

The first is capacity. Because Blu-ray utilses a lens with a greater numerical aperture (NA) than HD-DVD, the laser spot can be focused with greater precision to fit more data on the same size disc. This allows Blu-ray to hold 25GB per layer (50GB on a dual-layer disc), whereas HD-DVD can only hold 15GB per layer (30GB on a dual-layer disc). Blu-ray has also adopted a higher data transfer rate for video and audio (54Mbps vs 36.55Mbps). The greater capacity and data transfer rates for Blu-ray will allow the movie studios to release their movies with higher quality video and audio than the HD-DVD format.

The second is content. The Blu-ray format has received broad support from the major movie studios as a successor to today's DVD format. Seven of the eight major movie studios (Warner, Paramount, Fox, Disney, Sony, MGM and Lionsgate) have already announced titles for Blu-ray, whereas HD-DVD only has support from three major movie studios (Warner, Paramount and Universal). This is an important difference because some of the studios might only support one of the formats, so you won't be able to get your favorite movies in the other format. Choosing the format with the most content support minimizes this risk.

The third is hardware support. The Blu-ray format has broad support from the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers, including Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Pioneer, Sharp, JVC, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, TDK, Thomson, LG, Apple, HP and Dell. The Blu-ray format will also be supported in the next-generation PlayStation 3 (PS3) video game console. This means that you will have a lot of choice when it comes to players and hardware. The HD-DVD format has far less supporters, so the amount of players and hardware will be very limited. So far, Toshiba is the only company to officially announce a HD-DVD player and it will only support 1080i output, while the announced Blu-ray players will support 1080p.

Anyone remember Betamax?

In the early eighties, there was a stoush between two video formats Betamax and VHS, Betamax proved to be the better format, however, I recall, Sony and Toshiba were the only manufacturers that provided this format, where as the VHS format was offered to the market, by the likes of JVC, Phillips, NEC, Panasonic, Sanyo, Sharp, Pioneer and Hitashi, resulting in Betamax (the better format) losing out, it simply couldn’t get market penetration.

At this stage it appears that Blu-ray will have the leading edge over HD-DVD, it also appears it will have longevity due the vast amount of electronic manufacturers in the market providing the same format.

But there’s one thing I know for sure, I will not be paying $1,300 for a unit, I’d be happy to wait for a year or more when I’ll be able to buy one for a tad over $200.00 or maybe less.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall...

Earlier today, I was pointed towards what may become the best friend of shot-snappers the world over: the MonsterPod mini tripod. The item in question certainly isn't a tripod in the traditional, literal sense; rather, it appears to be a nifty, pocket-sized doodad that allows you to attach a camera to pretty much any surface, whatever the angle, anywhere.

By pretty much any surface, I mean tree bark and, well, even rougher tree bark for the love of all that's holy - and walls and glass and metal and... oh, you get the idea. Interestingly enough, it uses Van der Waals force to achieve adhesion, which is probably better known for being the reason geckos don't fall off things, generally speaking.

Of course, the camera can't be too heavy, but if you're the kind of person who lugs around big, heavy lenses for recreational purposes, you probably have a tripod in the car anyway. And a rug. Possibly even a wicker basket full of delicious sandwiches and a thermos of coffee, but I digress.

If this 'MonsterPod' is half as good as it looks, I won't regret having ordered two of the damn things (yay, Amazon). You can 'read all about it', as they say in the news industry, at MonsterPod's awful website. Which we didn't work on, so don't blame us.

What the Heck is RSS?

And why should I care?

Good questions. First, here's why you should care.

Unlike getting website updates or ezines by email, RSS feeds give you absolute, 100% complete control over the situation.

You don't have to reveal your email address. If you want to stop receiving content, you don't have to request to be "taken off the list."

One click, and poof! the subscription is gone.

Plus, since there's no email address involved, there's no way a publisher can sell, rent or give away the means to contact you.

That's right! no more spam, viruses, phishing, or identity theft. And best of all, no reason to put yourself at the mercy of the publisher's intentions.

You won't need to suffer through the legalese in the privacy policy (if there is one) looking for loopholes that will send you deeper into inbox hell. No more setting up dummy Hotmail accounts "just in case."

Again, if you don't like the content, you can make it disappear as fast as you can change a TV channel. With just one click.

Pretty cool, huh?

That is cool! Umm.. What the heck is RSS?

Alright! Now we're ready to get to that part.

RSS is a simply an Internet technology standard that allows busy people to receive updates to web-based content of interest.

You might have figured that much out by now. But basically, that's the essence of an RSS feed , you subscribe and then receive new content automatically in your feed reader.

If you actually want to know how RSS works, click here.

What the heck is a feed reader?

You may already be using a form of feed reader, and not even realize it. If you use personalized home page services like My Yahoo or My MSN, you've got RSS capabilities built in. That's how syndicated content like news, weather and stock quotes appears on your personal page. You can also add content from any blog or other site that uses RSS to provide updates.

Other web-based tools are primarily dedicated to feed reading only. One of the most popular web-based feed readers at this point is Bloglines, and it's also free and easy to get started with.

If you use the Firefox browser, you can also receive RSS feeds from your tool bar by using the Live Bookmarks function. The next version of Internet Explorer will add this feature as well.

Finally, there are desktop-based feed readers. These function somewhat like an email program for feeds. Examples include Newsgator and Feed Demon.

If it sounds complicated, it's really not. And things will get even easier when the next version of Outlook integrates feed-reading capabilities. So, you'll have the same convenience that email subscriptions offered in the old days, without any of the terrible consequences of giving out your email address to potentially unscrupulous characters.

Sounds good. So how do I subscribe to a Feed?

First of all, look for the subscription or feed options (some bloggers make this difficult for some odd reason). You might see a variety of buttons (amusingly called chicklets).

If the site you want to subscribe to uses FeedBurner to aid in the subscription process (like Copyblogger and many other popular sites), you'll likely see the standard RSS icon, which takes you to a page that will give you an array of the most popular feed readers so you can select yours, and you'll go from there. This is the new standard RSS icon:

Sometimes there will be a chicklet for your particular reader right on the blog that will take you to the appropriate subscription page. You may see these (among others):

Add to Google

Subscribe in Bloglines

Finally, you may also see little orange buttons that say XML or RSS. Often these chicklets will take you to a page that looks like code gibberish. In this case, you simply cut and paste the page URL from your browser window and manually paste it into your feed reader subscription function.

Hopefully this last method will soon disappear, never to be seen again.

In summary: RSS solves BIG problems.

So there you have it, RSS is being adopted at a phenomenal rate, because it's a good thing for everyone.

The benefit to readers is obvious. And it's good for publishers too, because we want to make sure that people feel comfortable subscribing, and that our message is not nuked by an overzealous spam filter.

If there's anything here that is confusing, or you have a question, please contact me and I'll be happy to help!

Thanks to Copyblogger for a helping hand with this tutorial.

Thank God for Spam filters!

As you can see from the following graph email SPAM levels have jumped a considerable amount in 2006 and are set to climb higher over 2007. There appears to be no surefire method of blocking the avalanche of spam that floods into our in-boxes on a daily (i should say hourly) basis.

Tired of Spam? So Are We All.

In my personal experience the general consensus amongst my peers is that emails that don't appear at first glance to come from a work colleague or client gets deleted. Immediately. This poses a serious problem for many of our clients who have been relying on email marketing or "blasts" to notify their clients of new products, services and specials.

This has caused a dramatic shift in the mindset of many of these clients. They must now identify a number of different alternative marketing approaches such as RSS feeds, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), Direct Mail (DM), and Pay Per Click (PPC) Search Engine Marketing (SEM) in order to get in front of their audience.

It is now very important to identify your different types of target audience and tailor your marketing to suit their habits and needs. From a website point of view Aaron Wall at SEOBook breaks down the various stake holders of a website beautifully.

As Aaron says
You do not get to be a market maker without being a market manipulator. It is hard to manipulate markets unless you come up with creative ways to meet the needs of and leverage profit from many stakeholders.
Food for thought...

UPDATE: Expanding on the above graph, here is a breakdown of the different spam types.
Not surprising at all to see the top 3 offenders!

How do we build our web sites?

Good question! We like to think we build them very well.. but i guess we are biased.. Oh you mean what do we use to build our websites? How are they powered?

Well thats a different story. Here are Cyberdesign Works we prefer open source technologies. Power to the people and all that guff. Given this, the vast majority of our new and future websites will be or are, underpinned by our own in-house CMS called Sanscode2.

Sanscode2 has been developed over the past 2 years by our in house development team using PHP. We have focussed on developing an easy to use "internet dummy" friendly content management system, we haven't however skimped on features.

Just a couple of the standard features are:

Sanscode Menu Manager - this allows you to very quickly and easily add, edit and delete any catagory or page within your website. It also allows for items to be unpublished yet not deleted.

Sanscode SEO Manager - Our SEO manager give you complete control over the title, keywords, description, and url of each and every page in your website. Not to mention control over image ALT Tags and Title tags (important things to search engines).

WYSIWYG Editor - What You See Is What You Get. If you know how to use Word you know how to use Sanscode2!

Plus because we developed it we have complete control to mold it to your specific requirements. Whether you require an ecommerce shopping cart, members area, photo gallery or custom object it can be plugged in to sanscode2 very quickly, easilly and most importantly inexpensivly.

To arrange a free demonstration of our sanscode2 CMS please contact us.

iPhone - The iPod, Palm, Blackberry and mobile phone killer

I want it! The latest offering from Apple the iPhone is certinally the biggest launch of the year (granted the year hasnt progressed far) and is certinally one of the coolest devices i have ever seen.

Sporting a massive 3.5inch touch sensitive screen, soft qwerty keyboard, 4 - 8 GB of memory and OSX this thing has the brains and brawn to take the place of every handheld device you currently own.

It even has a fully functional web browser which means that it should be able to support all current website functions such as flash, animations and embeded video.

I can see myself now, walking to the sound of my favourite tune, surfing the web and just toying with the itunes cover float feature!

The only problem is that it won't be available in Australia until at least 2008!

I knew i should have bought some Apple Stock!

How NOT to copy a website

A couple of months ago we received what we like to think of as a great compliment. One of our clients websites was duplicated illegally. A compliment for us however a major headache for our client.

JD Security discovered that they were receiving an unusual number of hits from India. being an Australian based company this didn't quite make sense to them and upon a little bit of investigation they found that their website had been copied by an unscrupulous Indian web design company for an Indian security company.

What amazes us is how lazy the duplication was! take a look at these screenshots and see if you can tell the difference.

Original JD Security web site:

Duplicated Indian web site:

Not only was the design exactly the same but our Indian friends also left the original JD Security Google Analytics code in and neglected to change the meta descriptions and left in code admitting that the page was:

Notice the references to Australia, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and the ACT!

Further damaging the Indian copy was the fact that a simple payment form from the JD Security website still linked back to JD Security!

You have to ask yourself why would they even bother!

Today 2 months on the copy is still live and unfortunately there seems to be very little that we or our client can do about the issue. We have alerted Google to the issue in an attempt to have the old Analytics code canceled and a new code issued however at this stage i am unaware of the outcome of this.

I am also fairly certain that the Digital Millennium Copyright Act doesn't apply to Australia let alone India.
What is one to do!?

It also appears that the "web design company" and i use the term loosely, that made the duplicate site is a serial offender. Check out the links on the footer of the offending page and check the code.

Is there a way to fight back at this blatant laziness?
